This is the Year to get Involved
Editorial by Jody Dow, Republican National Committeewoman
Jody Dow was elected Mass. Republican State Committeewoman in Sep. 1994 and has been on the Board of Directors, Mass. Republican Party since 1978. She is currently president of the Middlesex Club, which is the oldest Republican club in the United States. She received the Abigail Adams Award from the Mass. Women's Political Caucus in 2001.
It has never been so clear that we need to elect more Republicans to the legislature. Our Governor, Mitt Romney, has been waging an uphill battle to bring reform to Massachusetts. But at every turn, the Democrats in the House and Senate have fought him. House Speaker Finneran and Senate President Travaglini have repeatedly blocked spending cuts and common sense government reforms. Their priority is to protect the status quo instead of representing the best interest of the people in the Commonwealth. Unfortunately, their record includes refusing to consolidate the Highway Department with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and combining area Court Houses to save millions of taxpayer dollars. They forget that it is the taxpayers' money not the governments.
It is vital for both the Republican party and our state that we elect more Republicans to the House and Senate. As your Republican National Committeewoman, I have been working hard with our Governor to recruit candidates for upcoming November elections. I am proud to say that this year, we have fielded a strong team of winners.
Last Tuesday night (May 25) our Republican National Committee Chairman, Ed Gillespie, came to Boston when we unveiled our 2004 slate. It was a tremendous event that even the Boston Globe mentioned in a positive manner.
I am proud to say that this year we have fielded a strong team of winners. Here are just a few of our up and coming campaigns to watch: Mike Jones, who is challenging Congressman Bill Delahunt, is one of the rising stars this year. He has already raised $100,000 and developed a strong grassroots organization. Larry Wheatly, who is running for the second time, should be seeking reelection. I am glad that he did not give up the fight after the 2002 election mishap. I know that he will be victorious this time. Senator Terry Murray knows that she is facing a tough election. Our candidate, Duncan Hunter, has already put her on notice that politics as usual is unacceptable. Let's not forget our incumbents. State Representative Shirley Gomes deserves our support. She has been an outstanding representative for her district and a tireless worker for the Republican party. I know the voters will recognize her dedication and overwhelmingly re-elect her next November. These are just a few of the many quality candidates that will represent the Republican party on the ballot this fall. However, it is not enough just to recruit strong candidates. We must give them our full support. We were successful when we all worked together for Senator Scott Brown's election and in implementing the RNC's 72-hour plan. I know we do it again.
Over the next few months, I will travel the entire state to help our candidates with events and grassroots development and to make sure that they receive the necessary support from both the State and National Parties.
This is the year to get involved, so please join with me in helping them over the next 155 days. I know that by working together we can win many of these races. Thank you.
