Meet Senator Jo Ann Sprague

Jo Ann Sprague has been a member of the Massachusetts General Court for 12 years, serving in the House from 1992-1998, and, from 1998 to date, as a Senator for the Bristol and Norfolk District. She is the Ranking Republican member of the Education, Arts and Humanities Committee, and also sits on the Senate Ways and Means, Public Safety, Taxation, and Science and Technology.

Senator Sprague's career can be characterized by strong commitments to family, community and public service. From 1950-53, she was in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. She met and married Warren G. Sprague while serving at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland. A Walpole resident for 42 years, she served as a member of the Walpole Capital Budget Committee and as its Representative Town Meeting Member for 12 years. Mother of six and grandmother of ten, she obtained a B.A. cum laude in Classical Studies from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1980. During her tenure at the State House, she has:

  • Secured exemptions from the state income tax for Veteran's Military pensions;
  • Sponsored legislation that would alleviate property tax rates for seniors;
  • Sponsored legislation to increase drunk driving penalties;
  • Created Free Heroes license plates for recipients of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star.
