Operation Paperback Books...Let's Do It Again
At the last meeting of the Middlesex Republican Women's Club, many members donated one or more paperback books as part of an Operation Paperback Books drive. Doris Karkota, inspired by a suggestion in the last issue of NFRW's Republican Woman magazine, has volunteered to collect paperback books, package them and mail them to men and women serving abroad. As she indicates below, Doris has offered to coordinate another collection at our MFRW meeting on April 8, 2006.
I was truly delighted by the generosity of the MRW Club's members with their donations of 47 paperback books for the troops. The Ops recommends that each package should contain no more than 20 books. I was given a list of 12 addresses of troop units in the Middle East (Afghanistan or Iraq) and choose two Army units and one Marine. I sent two boxes with 13 books and one with 14 books.
Some of the donated books, unfortunately, were not within the restraints imposed. Several of the books were old and had badly damaged covers. Two of the books did not conform to the religious restrictions imposed by the Muslims. We are not allowed to include books with photos or illustrations showing female skin or books that appear to contain religious material.
- Books to the Middle East must not contain religious criticisms.
- Cover art must not show any female skin below the neck.
- Books must be in good condition.

I expect to hear from the recipients within a few weeks and will pass on their letters to the Club.
Thank You.
